Why The Esquire Is the Best Historic Bar in San Antonio

Have you ever thought about what must be the best historic bar in San Antonio? Unless you're a tour guide or a history teacher, you probably haven't. But maybe you should! Connecting with local or even national history doesn't have to be restricted to dry places like libraries, classrooms, or museums. Dining out or downing a few drinks at The Esquire can be a historical event all its own.

Prohibition is often thought of as a short-sighted and silly time in our nation's history. At The Esquire Tavern, they remember the end of prohibition as the biggest party in town. Of course, while The Esquire never ever served illegal booze, it did revel in its newfound legality.

In 2008, Esquire Tavern was bought by new owner Chris Hill, who arduously restored the place to its previous state of splendor. Comfy seating, period décor, and the longest wooden bar in all of Texas were just the beginning. The best historic bar in San Antonio needs to look great, of course. But drinks, eats, and fun? That's what's on the menu for a great night out.

It's true that The Esquire Tavern has the record for longest wooden bar in the state. It's also been called the "funnest bar" by Thrillist and was recently nominated for a James Beard award, which is only given out to places serious about food. We may go to a bar once for its history, but we go back for the food and drinks we end up fantasizing about all week at work.

In the end, what makes a place the "best historic bar in San Antonio"? The answer may be different for everyone. Whether your passion is the classic décor and slick wooden bar or you simply want to try a new drink, the Esquire has just the thing to make your night out awesome. So, you're looking for the best San Antonio hipster bar. A noble goal, and we commend you. Hipster sightings on the Riverwalk are increasingly common. Locals and tourists alike enjoy these fascinating creatures. Free-range hipsters can be recognized by their well-groomed mustaches (curls optional), a liberal amount of fragrant beard conditioner, and a zest for life that goths and emos simply cannot match.

Why hipster bars? Good question. Hipsters are dedicated to — if you know the phrase — sucking the marrow out of life. The hipster set has a passion for simple, clean things: music performed with zeal, drinks prepared with passion and care, pickles perfectly seasoned and brined especially for those who will appreciate the time spent, etc. Classic music, ambiance, food, and extraordinary libations — people go to hipster bars because hipsters know what's up.

We say that the finest example of a San Antonio hipster bar has to be Esquire Tavern. They've been around since prohibition (but not before — they're not Capone's guys, for heaven's sake!) and serve incredible microbrews, classic and newfangled cocktails alike. There's a reason locals flock to Esquire Tavern: the food is awesome, and the hipster watching is just as good.

  • Local San Antonio residents looking for a riverside hangout without the crush of tourists.

Drinkers and diners come to “Downstairs” at The Esquire Tavern because they offer the same fabulous drinks and attentive, knowledgeable staff that they have upstairs. There’s also a fun menu of apps and other tasty snacks that your server can help you pair perfectly with your beverage of choice. But unlike upstairs, “Downstairs” features an intimate space and a quieter atmosphere—in case you really want to hear what the person next to you is saying. Visit to relax, have a business meeting, or cuddle with your sweetie. Reserve a table “Downstairs” at The Esquire Tavern and find out for yourself what people in the know are talking about.

How do you find the ideal balance that satisfies everyone in your group? Consider the following:

  • Drinks. Check out downtown San Antonio bars that specialize in the drinks you love. Ideally, they’ll also have mixologists with a modern style so you can try fresh new mixed drinks too. For example, The Esquire Tavern is well-known for a superbly-crafted Old Fashioned, but seasonal menus feature enticing new cocktails sure to whet your interest as well as your whistle. THIS JUST IN: The Esquire Tavern Receives James Beard Nomination!

The Esquire Tavern team is proud to announce that we have been nominated for a James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program. Along with bars lauded as best in the nation (and even, depending who you ask, the world), we will vie for the prestigious award, announced on March 15.

When asked by Ed Tijerina of the SA Express News, our fearless leader Chris Hill said simply, "The nomination in itself is an honor. We're simply thrilled to be nominated. To be nominated twice is sweeter." You read that right... TWICE. Our first nomination was back in 2012, and we're thrilled to be amongst bars like Anvil Bar & Refuge in Houston, and the Dead Rabbit, in the Big Apple.

We're not the only San Antonio-based operators to be nominated; Chef Steve McHugh of Cured at the Pearl was also nominated in the category of Best Chef-Southwest... This is his second nomination as well.

So tonight, we raise our glasses to our outstanding staff... Congratulations to all nominees!

The Ultimate San Antonio Hipster Bar

02.15.2017

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

The hipster. This elusive creature can be spotted in and around major cityscapes in most US states. Known for choosing vintage fashion and timeless grooming options over modern trends, free range hipsters are known for their witty banter, Instagram filters, waxed mustaches, and appreciation for the finer, simpler things in life. If you’re looking to spot the free range hipster in its natural habitat, a San Antonio hipster bar might be a good place to begin.

Keep in mind that self-respecting hipsters can’t be found in just any dive pub. To seek out truly discerning hipsters, one must travel to local gastropubs and drink emporiums of the highest quality. If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of free range, locally sourced hipsters near you, try these tips:

  • Avoid sports bars, strip clubs, motorcycle hangouts, and other places frequented by non-hipsters. Hipsters frighten easily when confronted with the mainstream.
  • Hipsters have an abiding fondness for classic beverages. Find the best Old Fashioned in town, and camp out near it. Eventually, the hipsters will appear.
  • Seek out establishments with a loyal customer base where the bartenders are well-versed in the finest and most esoteric ingredients.
  • Hipsters love history. Set up a hipster-watching enclave in a San Antonio hipster bar with a long and celebrated history.
  • What’s better than hipster sightings in a San Antonio hipster bar? Why, a hipster sighting in a little-known secret room of a San Antonio hipster bar.

Most hipsters are also foodies. This is where hipster watching can get complicated. Occasionally, modern hipsters bring with them a host of modern dietary requirements. To see these hipsters in the wild, you must first find restaurants that cater to those who are vegan or gluten free, while still providing fare for carnivores. Bonus points for homemade brews or French press coffee.

Perhaps the most enlightening aspect of hipster watching is how much there is to enjoy in a San Antonio hipster bar. The food, history, drinks, and ambiance are so welcoming, you might forget all about hipster sightings and focus on having a noteworthy time. To book a table at The Esquire Tavern, please call 210-222-2521 or visit our website.

Which Restaurants at the Riverwalk Do Locals Prefer?

01.26.2017

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

Traveling is always an adventure, and if you listen to what the guidebooks say, you’ll no doubt find yourself in some decent restaurants near the most popular tourist attractions. But to really get a feel for any city, you’ve got to go where the locals go. People who live in town always know where to get the best local foodie fare and the most delicious drinks without breaking the bank. If you ask them about the best restaurants at the Riverwalk, they’re surely tell you. Texans are friendly like that.

For example, if you ask MySanAntonio.com, they’ll recommend The Esquire Tavern as one of the best cocktail bars and restaurants at the Riverwalk. It’s the oldest bar on the Riverwalk and has a well-worn wooden bar to accentuate that—measuring more than 100 feet, it’s actually the longest wooden bar in Texas.

The Esquire Tavern also makes The Guardian’s list of best cocktail bars in San Antonio, along with The Brooklynite and Bar 1919. The Esquire Tavern in particular is praised for its welcoming atmosphere, excellent selection of craft beers, and a diverse crowd that ranges from politicians to students to hipsters and their parents. The Esquire Tavern also boasts recognition from culinary master James Beard’s foundation, making it one of the most lauded restaurants at the Riverwalk.

As we’ve established, local foodies will never let you down when you ask them for the best restaurants at the Riverwalk. Those that cater to the carnivores and vegetarians in your crowd are ideal for big groups. A diverse menu is a must—a happy hour is even better!

Once you’ve chosen the restaurants at the Riverwalk you want to experience, there’s one last thing to keep in mind. If locals love the place, it’s likely to be crowded. While it isn’t required to call ahead or reserve a table online, it could save you time. This is especially true if you want to take advantage of outdoor seating, are with a large group, or just want an especially good table. You can book at table at the historical Esquire Tavern by visiting www.esquiretavern-sa.com and clicking on “Book a Table.”

San Antonio Cocktail Bars: Mixology at its Best

01.12.2017

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

Checking out San Antonio cocktail bars? Do you want a fun and festive atmosphere? Are you looking for someplace with a lot of local history? Do you and your foodie friends want fabulous eats as well as great drinks? When it comes to San Antonio cocktail bars, there are plenty of options to be had. If you don’t live in the area or are new to the bar scene, you might not know where to begin.

Got a favorite drink? Local mixologists have specialties they’re happy to tell you about. For instance, if you’re looking for an Old Fashioned, they say there’s a place on Brooklyn Avenue that has a decent one, and another on South Alamo Street. But if you ask the locals where they go for the best mixed drinks, they’re going to tell you: The Esquire Tavern. The Esquire Tavern is known for having a lip-smacking Old Fashioned and Manhattans you’ll want to write home about.

How do you know when you’ve found truly exceptional San Antonio cocktail bars? Consider these tips:

  • Look for a varied drink menu that has something for everyone.
  • Is the bar known for any specific drinks? Be sure to try at least one of them. Drinks don’t become fan favorites by accident.
  • Insist on passionate mixologists who are adept with classic cocktails, yet always concocting fun new creations.
  • There should always be a fine selection of microbrews, local fare, and custom blends of rum or scotch.
  • Have questions about the drink menu? Your server or bartender should always take the time to answer them fully. How else can you expect to develop your palate?

Like much of life, the key to excellence in San Antonio cocktail bars is passion. A passion for handcrafted food and exceptional beverages found in the people who create them every day. Reservations aren’t required for a table at The Esquire Tavern, but it’s always a good idea if you don’t want to miss out. Contact info@esquiretavern-sa.com

Taste Local Food at San Antonio Downtown Restaurants

12.27.2016

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

Everyone loves a night out on the town. Going out with friends or family is always fun because of the conversation, drinks, and revelry that are sure to ensue. Somehow though, choosing a restaurant that everyone can agree on can be the most difficult and frustrating part of the evening. That can be true even if you’re just seeking a happenin’ downtown happy hour.

What if there’s a vegetarian in the bunch? Burgers are out, right? Maybe not. You might have a friend who prefers high-end cocktails to a local microbrew. How do you know which bar stocks all the best top-shelf liquor? What if you want to try authentic local food options but aren’t sure which San Antonio downtown restaurants are just part of a chain?

Here are some tips for finding the very best eatery for a night out:

  • Restaurants that source local food likely have a menu that changes throughout the year. Why? Because the availability of fresh produce and even meats varies throughout the seasons. Palates also change. Summer may mean salads galore, but chili? That’s a winter food.
  • Bars and eateries that refer to drinks as “libations” are telling you they take beverages seriously. This may mean microbrews and small batch sodas. But it can also mean top-shelf alcohol choices and bartenders who are passionate about mixing you an exceptional experience. That’s exactly the kind of downtown happy hour you and your party will find memorable.
  • New to town? San Antonio downtown restaurants that have been around for years and are still popular with locals are your best bet for good food and drink. Always ask a local resident to recommend a bar, eatery, or pub.
  • Don’t be discouraged if you can’t get a reservation at the San Antonio downtown restaurant of your choice. Keep at it. A full house or a long wait always means they’re worth it. Nobody stands around for an hour for the promise of sub-par food or a miniscule beer selection.
  • Looking to try a cocktail inspired by a book you love? You can! Now that’s a downtown happy hour that literary types will love. The bartenders at The Esquire Tavern love creating new drinks almost as much as they love serving up the classics.
  • Be aware that even in a top gastropub, the kitchen might close before the bar does. Check menus, call ahead, or ask your server to warn you before you get cut off from the grill.
  • Not sure what you’ll be in the mood for? Choose a place that has varied options like casual downstairs dining, patio seating when the weather is nice, or seats right at the bar.
  • It’s always fun to choose a downtown happy hour with a bit of history attached. The Esquire Tavern, for example, has been around since the repeal of Prohibition—and has been celebrating it ever since.
  • Not looking for a full meal? The Esquire Tavern offers a casual basement space serving a limited menu and a full bar. It’s an excellent choice for those who like to nibble as they imbibe.
  • Look for fun accoutrements at San Antonio downtown restaurants. Maybe seek out the longest wooden bar in Texas. That can also be found at The Esquire Tavern—all 100+ feet of it. Amazing!
  • Online menus are a streamlined way to see what a place will be serving before you drive all the way there. Are there local veggies? What about truly healthy options for people who want to live forever? Check out what’s on offer and make sure everyone in your party agrees beforehand.
  • The best downtown happy hour bars and eateries will have affordable specials along with an expansive list of beer and wines. Look for lunch or late-night specials too!

So many aspects make for a great night out with friends, a date, or your family. Your party deserves a comfortable place with lots of colorful local options in food and drink—a tried and true eatery with a passion for good local food and an array of classic and modern drink options. Be sure to phone the San Antonio downtown restaurants of your choosing to reserve a table. And enjoy your night out!

If you’re watching your weight, a bar probably isn’t where you’d choose your next meal. Most bar food is just chips, dips, cheese and fried fare, which aren’t exactly helpful to your waistline or your health.

Fortunately, not all bars offer the same trite food. In fact, part of what makes The Esquire one of the best San Antonio bars around is that our handcrafted, chef-made food also features healthy options — food that won’t bust your belt or leave you feeling heavy and drained all night.

Are you looking for a bar with refreshing, tasty, diet-friendly dining options? The Esquire’s your place. We offer:

  • A variety of salad options — Forget wilted salads doused with too much dressing and stale croutons. Here, we offer an array of gourmet salads like our hanger steak salad, which boasts all-natural and humanely raised Niman Ranch hanger steak, mixed greens, roasted tomato, goat cheese and a basil vinaigrette. Another favorite is our nicoise salad. Complete with seared tuna, pickled green beans, onions, olives, deviled egg, roasted potatoes and a mouthwatering peanut vinaigrette, it’s a heaping bowlful of healthy! You can also add chicken or steak to any of our salads for an added boost of protein.
  • Low-cal sandwiches — Our fried chicken sandwich might not be your choice while on a diet, but our Vietnamese bánh mì or our tuna melt are excellent options! Order with a side salad to complete your meal.
  • Hearty, healthy meals — Need a more filling entrée? Our tavern chicken breast comes with sides of white bean salad, baby kale salad and raisin chutney. You can’t go wrong with that! Our lamb lettuce wraps are also a tantalizing choice that will fill you up but not weigh you down.

At The Esquire Tavern, we’re not about typical bar fare. What makes us one of the best San Antonio bars is our unique menu — of cocktails, local beers, wine and delicious, healthy food options. Tired of boring bar bites? Stop by The Esquire Tavern today and try some of our lighter options for yourself!

When you come to San Antonio, it’s time to kick fast food restaurants, chains and standard American fare to the curb. Here, we have a cuisine all our own—a little bit Texan, a little bit Mexican and a whole lot of spicy! It’s a flavor you can’t find anywhere else, and it’s a must-have any time you’re in our city.

Are you making a trip to San Antonio or just looking to get some good old Alamo City cuisine? Then stop by The Esquire. We’re one of the best Riverwalk restaurants around if you’re looking for authentic, local fare at a reasonable price. We offer:

  • Authentic apps—Just want a snack? Grab one of our delicious, locally-inspired apps, like our tacos con papas, chili-salt fries, fried corn on the cob, pork belly rillettes, fried plantains, shrimp campechana or Texas onion dip. Really want something to wow your taste buds? Give our chalupitas a whirl.
  • Healthy options—Want to try local fare without wrecking your diet? Try our chicken tortilla soup or our corn salad, which features roasted corn, spicy peppers, lime and chimichurri sauce.
  • Down-home burgers—It wouldn’t be Texas eatin’ without some big, juicy burgers. Try our sirloin cheeseburger, or go rogue with a lamb burger with mint and feta or a “wildcat” burger with organic beef, grilled pineapple and jalapeno for a one-of-a-kind experience.
  • Adventurous entrees—If true San Antonio fare is on your agenda, our entrees are your answer. Our big red empanada offers a spicy, meat-filled option, and our Texas Wagyu ribeye is great for the carnivore in you. There’s also the spicy chile relleno, the frito pie and the classic cornmeal-crusted fried catfish.

Texas Tiki Week is Back!

The Esquire Tavern welcomes you to imbibe our annual offering to the tiki gods! Every year, Texas barsmiths create menus of colorful, flavorful, eccentrically garnished cocktails- all in ode to the religion that is TIKI. Tropically inspired cocktails are at the center of the tiki movement, and are served as a ritual – not just a drink – involving juices (and even chunks) of exotic fruits and even real flowers as garnish, exciting swizzle sticks, and occasionally even flames.

Our menu will consist of six $10 tiki cocktails, all garnished with flair! September 12-19, all day long... Come on down and get your tiki on!

Downtown San Antonio Bars: Secrets of the Mixologists

09.01.2016

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

There’s a reason The Esquire is one of the top downtown San Antonio bars, and that’s our expert staff. You see, here at The Esquire, the people making your drinks aren’t just your average bartenders; they’re bona fide, award-winning mixologists who know how to make a drink that hits the spot for any taste or budget.

How do they do it? Well, here are a few of their little-known secrets:

  • They draw on the classics. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. People have been making cocktails for centuries, and sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity and you can turn an old, classic drink into something new, refreshing and inspiring in no time.
  • They get to know their customer. Asking the customer about their tastes—what drinks and flavors they like, don’t like or just plain hate—plays a big role in a mixologist’s job. The more they know, the better they can craft a drink you will love!
  • They’re experts on a wide range of ingredients. Getting familiar with a customer’s tastes will get you nowhere if you don’t know the ingredients you’re working with. Mixologists take lots of time to get to know their tools—the liquors, liqueurs, flavorings, fruits and other extras that can be added, mixed or infused, and they try all kinds of combinations and mixtures until they have those flavor profiles down pat.
  • They practice, practice, practice. It sounds like a weird thing to practice, but true mixologists really do practice their craft. In fact, many even enter competitions against others in the field to gain more experience and show off their skills.

Want a drink that truly wets your whistle? Then come to The Esquire Tavern, and see why we’re one of the top downtown San Antonio bars in the area. We promise you won’t regret it!

Home from college during the weekend? No one wants to go back to their old haunts from high school. Running into classmates you’d long thought you’d forgotten is not the way to spend your precious days off! Instead, venture out into new territory, and try something like The Esquire Tavern—a different sort of bar that offers expertly made drinks, tasty food and even better company.

Why is The Esquire one of the best San Antonio bars to hit while you’re home for the weekend? Well, here are just a few of the reasons:

  • We’ve got the best drinks. Want a beer that’s made in San Antonio? The best cocktail you’ve ever tasted? Want to impress your girl with an expertly crafted drink? We’ve got what you need. Just hit us up on the weekend, and you’ll find it all right here.
  • We’ve got entertainment. Tired of listening to the guy next to you at the bar complain? Forget about it here. Instead, watch our stellar entertainment instead. We bring in live music to help you kick back and relax.
  • We have awesome food. Most bars are iffy on the food. They have some basic items—burgers, chips, snack foods—but they don’t have anything really great. Worst yet is when the food tastes microwaved or greasy. Definitely not so at The Esquire. We have a constantly changing seasonal menu crafted by our expert in-house chef. From full entrees to amazing shareables to delectable desserts, you’ll find a new favorite here.
  • We’re in a prime location for fun. Don’t want to head home to mom and dad’s afterwards? No sweat. The Esquire’s right on the River Walk, so there are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and other places to hit before hitting the road. Want to avoid driving? There are hotels nearby, too. They’re all within walking distance.

Looking for the best San Antonio bars to spend your weekends? Then come to The Esquire. We’re the longest standing bar in the city—and there’s a reason for that. Come experience it for yourself today!

The Second Annual Barman’s Brunch

01.14.2016

Let’s be real: we’re all struggling to recuperate from this past week’s shenanigans. Everyone’s telling us to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, when all we really want to do is have some delectable, stick-to-your-ribs grub and a daytime cocktail (or two) while relaxing with our friends. We feel you, so we’re bringing back the Barman’s Brunch! This is our way of saying, ‘thank you,’ ‘we love you,’ ‘see you next year, ‘ so don’t miss these amazing menus… They’re especially for you! Together with The Barman’s Fund and some incredibly selfless industry members, The Esquire Tavern is offering an all-day, elevated Sunday brunch to benefit Dress for Success San Antonio.

We’re talking a Chicken Fried Ribeye with Jalapeño Gravy and Fried Eggs, Bread Box Biscuits with Lamb Sausage Gravy, Grits and Grillades, and more… All prepared with fresh, local ingredients- because that’s just how we do things. Our cocktail menu will feature a smattering of classic cocktails, including a Pisco Sour, Sazerac, and Bee’s Knees, as well as traditional Brunch tipples like our Bloody Mary or Margarita, and $1 of every cocktail purchased from our Brunch menu will benefit Dress for Success, by way of The Barman’s Fund. Dress for Success San Antonio is an organization that targets the needs of low-income women by promoting economic security and self-sufficiency to break the chains of generational poverty through job preparation, employment retention and career development programs. You can learn more about Dress for Success here: http://www.dfssa.org/

The Barman’s Fund operates on one simple philosophy: ‘[we figure] that most community charities would much rather have 6 hours of tips than 6 hours of us washing dishes,’ so The Barman’s Fund gathers bartenders who are willing to donate their tips from one designated shift to a charity, so our servers and bartenders participating in the Barman’s Brunch will be donating their tips to Dress for Success San Antonio. You’ll never know if you don’t try! And it’s all for a good cause: benefitting the Tequila Interchange Project.

Here’s how it works: arrive at the Tavern, biceps blazing, ready to squeeze all the limes you can in 1 minute. After paying your $10 entry fee, you’ll challenge your favorite bartenders at one of the most essential bar tasks! You have the chance to win some amazing swag, like rare tequilas y mezcales, gift certificates, y mas… Not to mention you’ll be reigning Luchador Limón Champ!

We’ve developed an amazing cocktail menu especially for this event using products from our sponsors: Pioneer Wine & Spirits, Hennessy/Belvedere, Kappa Pisco, Compass Box, and Aviation Gin. All cocktails on this menu will be priced at $8, and $1 of each purchase will also go directly to TIP, as well as all raffle ticket and entry fee monies. Want to guarantee a great date? Then forget fancy-shmancy upscale eateries, and take your next date to one of the many bar restaurants in downtown San Antonio instead. You’ll get a lot more food for your money, and you and your date will have a more relaxed, entertaining and fun evening overall.

With bar restaurants in downtown San Antonio, you get:

  • A beautiful view—No scene is more lovely in San Antonio than the cobblestoned paths of the Riverwalk with the Alamo City skyline behind them. Head up to the rooftop of one of the many hotels in the area for an even more romantic view.
  • Drinks to ease the tension—Dates, and first dates in particular, can sometimes get a little awkward. By heading to a bar restaurant, you can break the ice and keep the drinks—and the conversation—flowing all night long.
  • Easy access to after-dinner activities—Want to listen to live music? See a comedian? Go dancing? You can do all this and more within walking distance of the Riverwalk. You can even take a ride down the San Antonio River in a barge or stroll hand-in-hand on the paths for a memorable end to your evening.
  • A place to stay—With all the hotels along the Riverwalk, the night never has to end for you and your special someone. Just choose from one of the many historical or contemporary hotels in the area. You won’t even have to make breakfast in the morning.

If you and your date want to meet somewhere different the next time around, throw those traditional “date” spots out the window. Instead, try The Esquire’s bar restaurants in downtown San Antonio, and have a fun, conversation-filled evening you’ll both enjoy. We even have happy hour specials if you want to get the night started early! Stop by today.

Best San Antonio Riverwalk Restaurants: We’re Getting a Lounge

11.11.2015

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

In the near future, we won’t just have an upstairs bar. We’ll be the proud owner of a new downstairs lounge—another reason we’re one of the best San Antonio Riverwalk restaurants around!

You see, The Esquire is secretly refitting the old River level. We’re making plans to remodel our basement (all 3,000 square feet of it), and turn it into an intimate lounge and hangout spot for San Antonians just like you.

Word has it this lounge will have limited seating, a separate cocktail menu and some small-scale eats. It will have the same unique throwback feel as our upstairs bar, only it will offer more room, more bartenders and more seating for our guests. Since other Riverwalk bars are notoriously crowded with wall-to-wall people, we think this will offer a welcome respite from other options in the area.

Welcome Expansion

Just like in the original Esquire Tavern bar, if you head to our downstairs area, you’ll still find our fine cocktails, well-crafted beers and Prohibition-era drinks, and we’ll offer even more wines than we currently do.

Plus, we’ll offer tasty bites and small plates to feed your cravings while you’re here. Our chef Brooke Smith and her culinary team will serve up delicious and satisfying food every time you come. Also, Chef Brooke recently did a stage at TÊTE Charcuterie in Chicago. Could charcuterie be part of the new offerings? Let’s wait and see . . .

Stay in the Loop

Currently, we’re going through the permitting process to get approval for our new basement lounge. Our goal is to have the place designed, remodeled and ready to open to the public in the near future. Make sure you stay tuned to our blog or visit us, and we’ll keep you updated as one of the best San Antonio Riverwalk restaurants gets even better!

Happy Hour in San Antonio: The 7 Most Refreshing Drinks

10.28.2015

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

It may be the beginning of the fall season, but that doesn’t mean the weather’s following suit. In fact, it will probably be a good two months before we see the colder temperatures start to creep in. So while you might be tempted to ring in autumn with a hot pumpkin spice latte by the fire, really, you’re better off with a cool and refreshing drink on the patio instead (our patio, to be exact!).

Wondering what to order or where to start? Here are seven amazing drinks you can get during our happy hour in San Antonio, hosted every Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.:

  1. Moscow Mule—One of the most refreshing drinks around, the Moscow Mule comes with vodka, lime, fizzy ginger beer and ice, all served in a cool copper mug.
  2. Little River—This vodka-based drink has a kick of apricot in it, giving it an enjoyable, tasty twist.
  3. Chelsea’s Flower—With hints of violette, dandelion and burdock, this drink isn’t just refreshing during hot weather; it also tastes just like a sunny day.
  4. Pulso del Borracho—Similar to a margarita, but with pineapple, passion fruit and orange, this tequila-based drink is a must-try.
  5. Kill the Pain—You’ll feel like you’re on a faraway beach with this tropical beverage, complete with Jamaican rum, coconut water, pineapple and orange.
  6. Fala Serio—Enjoy a drink with a little kick? This baby has a bit of spicy jalapeno in it—San Antonio’s favorite fruit!
  7. Pleasure Seeker—Loads of fruity flavors, basil and ice make this an excellent cool-down treat when the sun’s too hot to handle.

You can’t go wrong with any of these mixed drinks. They’ll pep you up, whet your whistle and cool you down until the weather starts to cool. Want to try one today? Then stop by our happy hour in San Antonio. All menu cocktails are $3 off!

San Antonio Pubs: The History of Beer in Texas

10.14.2015

Posted By: Esquire Team

SHARE:

As one of the oldest San Antonio pubs around, we’ve been serving up beer for nearly a century—light beers, cheap beers, craft beers and just about anything and everything in between. But there weren’t always this many options. In fact, before the 1850s, there were no known commercial breweries in the entire state!

Let’s take a walk down memory lane, and learn all about how the Texas brewery scene came into being.

The History of Texas Beer

In the early years, Texas beer was only brewed in the cooler months—since the lack of refrigeration made it nearly impossible to keep beer at optimal temperatures in the hot, Texas summer.

The first official brewery in our great state was William A. Menger’s Western Brewery, which opened in 1855. It eventually became attached to the Menger Hotel—a popular San Antonio mainstay that still stands tall today. By 1860, there were 11 Texas breweries, and a decade later, there were 27. Some of the first breweries included Pearl Beer, Probst Brewery and more.

Most of these breweries only survived for a short time, with 43 going under or changing production to non-alcoholic drinks between 1890 and 1919, when Prohibition started. The industry eventually bounced back, however, with national giants like Miller and Anheuser-Busch moving onto the scene, and specialty brewers like Spoetzl, Lone Star and Schlitz rising to prominence. Today, Texas is home to some of the biggest breweries in the nation, producing brands like Shiner Bock, Lone Star and Miller Lite.

Try Texas Beer Today

Want to sample the best the Texas brewery scene has to offer? Come to The Esquire Tavern today. We’re one of the oldest San Antonio pubs around, and we offer local, craft and classic beers you’ll love. Be sure to stop by during happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., when Texas draft beers are $1 off!

Best Bars Downtown San Antonio: A Look at Tequila’s Long History

09.04.2015

Posted By: Giles-Parscale

SHARE:

As one of the longest-running and best bars downtown San Antonio has to offer, we have quite the history with tequila. We’ve been serving up this delicious spirit since the 1930s, and we’re still serving it up today—in margaritas, in matadors, on the rocks and more.

Want to learn more about one of the Lone Star state’s most popular liquors? Let’s take a look at its illustrious history now.

A Timeline of Tequila

The origin of Tequila dates back thousands of years to when agave was discovered, fermented and turned into an alcoholic spirit called “pulque.” This was consumed by the Aztec and Mayan leaders and high priests, mostly during religious ceremonies. The remaining history went a little like this:

  • 1519: Hernan Cortez and the Spanish entered Tenochtitlan and observed the Aztecs drinking pulque.
  • 1525: The Spanish created their own take on pulque by cooking and distilling the mescal plant.
  • 1532: The Spanish traveled to central Mexico and discovered a tribe of Indians in a village called “Tequitlan,” which the Spanish later renamed “Tequila.”
  • 1630: Spaniards began cooking and distilling the blue agave plant, creating something they called “mescal wine.” This later became known as tequila.
  • 1795: Jose Guadalupe Cuervo got land and rights to become the first commercial producer of tequila.
  • 1836: Americans first experienced tequila during the war over Texas with Mexico.
  • 1861-65: Due to a shortage in whiskey and moonshine during the American Civil War, Mexican tequila vendors began selling their spirit along the Rio Grande to Americans.
  • 1873: El Paso, Texas became one of the first cities to receive legal exports of tequila in the U.S.

And the rest is history! Tequila slowly grew in popularity over the years, and the invention of the ever-popular margarita helped sales to skyrocket. Now it’s one of the most sought-after spirits in the country.

Have we gotten you in the mood for a little tequila? Stop by The Esquire, one of the best bars downtown San Antonio has to offer, today for happy hour. We’ve got a margarita with your name on it!

When it comes to local restaurants, San Antonio residents have an abundance to choose from. There are American eateries, Mexican cafes, and just about every other type of cuisine you can think of.

Our specialty at The Esquire? That’d be pub fare—with a twist. We take classic bar food, and we up the ante a bit. Here are a few of our unique pub fare items you just can’t pass up:

  1. Deviled eggs—These aren’t like the ones your grandma made. Our deviled eggs are topped with zesty pink peppercorns and arugula, and they’re made with only free-range eggs.
  2. Corn on the cob—We give corn on the cob a new name. Ours is fried, dusted with Cotija cheese and served with chili-lime aioli. You can’t beat it!
  3. Pimento cheese—This dip has long been a staple at pubs and bars, but ours is a little different. Instead of giving you crackers or chips for your pimento, we put it in a sandwich and grill it up. You can even add bacon if you like.
  4. Burger—Forget boring old burgers. We’ve got a lineup of unique and mouthwatering burgers like you’ve never had before. Try our lamb burger, bison burger or wildcat burger, which comes with red pepper jelly, grilled pineapple, habanero aioli and more.
  5. Fries—No more plain-Jane fries. Give our chili salt fries a whirl, and get a spicy kick too. They come with a delicious cumin aioli for dipping.
  6. Fish and chips—You won’t find a better plate of fish and chips than ours. Our cod is beer battered, fried and served up with a hearty portion of our handmade tartar sauce and fries.

Tired of your average, run-of-the-mill local restaurants, San Antonio residents? Then come to The Esquire Tavern. We offer a full menu of delicious, unique items you can’t find anywhere else in the city, so stop by today!

Bars Downtown San Antonio: The Story of the Old-Fashioned

07.06.2015

Posted By: Giles-Parscale

SHARE:

As one of the oldest bars in downtown San Antonio, we’re no strangers to classic drinks. In fact, those are some of our most popular items! From Gimlets and Gin Rickeys to Pimm’s Cups and Moscow Mules, we do them all and we do them well.

One of our top-selling drinks? That’d be the Old-Fashioned. A classic, simple drink, the Old-Fashioned was popular in the 1950s, and thanks to Mad Men and the gin-drinking Don Draper, it has seen a big comeback in the last few years.

But how did this classic drink get its start? And how did it stay on bar menus for decades after its creation? Let’s look at the Old-Fashioned’s history to find out.

The History of the Old-Fashioned

The Old-Fashioned first made its appearance in the early 1800s, offering a simpler alternative to the fancy, overly sweet cocktails that were popular at the time. It was easy to make (just sugar, bitters, whiskey and lemon peel), and for many years, it was simply known as a “whiskey cocktail.”

By the 1860s, the drink became more often known as an “Old-Fashioned,” and bartenders began to add liqueurs, absinthe and other flavors to the cocktail. Purists began sending in letters to local newspapers, renouncing this over-complexity and calling for a simpler, purer version of the drink.

And bars followed suit. The original version of the Old-Fashioned once again became popular, and the fancy, jazzed-up versions fell by the wayside. That didn’t last for long, however. A few decades later, cocktail books began calling for apple, cherry, orange and even pineapple flavoring, and the Old-Fashioned became unpopular once again.

It remained in virtual obscurity until 2007, when AMC’s Mad Men premiered, and the drink was featured prominently in nearly every episode. Since then, it’s seen a resurgence, popping up in bars and restaurants around the world.

Grab an Old-Fashioned Today

Want to take a load off and enjoy this classic drink? Stop by The Esquire Tavern today. As one of the oldest bars in downtown San Antonio, we’re proud to offer the Old-Fashioned and dozens of other classic cocktails, craft beers and more.

Celebrating 80 Years as One of the Best Bars on the Riverwalk

06.09.2015

Posted By: Giles-Parscale

SHARE:

Just a few months ago, The Esquire Tavern celebrated something no other bars on the Riverwalk can boast: 80 full years of serving the San Antonio area.]

Looking Back Through the Years

Aside from a short five-year hiatus, The Esquire Tavern has been a popular Riverwalk watering hole for more than eight whopping decades, opened just after Prohibition ended. Since the very beginning, we’ve been a place where everyone from politicians to accountants to artists can pull up a stool, sit down and grab a cool drink.

And when you come in today, you still get a sense of those early days. We still serve up Prohibition-era drinks and cocktails that you just can’t find at other bars on the Riverwalk, and our décor, seating and overall ambience is more vintage than what you’d expect of such a bustling area.

In recent years, we’ve also added a stellar professional chef and a full menu to satisfy every customer’s taste buds. From shareable bar snacks and appetizers to full entrees and pub fare, we’ve got it all right here at The Esquire.

Celebrating the Big 8-0

To celebrate our big milestone, we threw a birthday bash in December of last year—December 5 to be exact (the day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933). Our “Riverwalk Empire” theme featured live jazz and burlesque performances, cocktails from every decade we’ve been open and four unique punches for customers to try.

Our anniversary was even featured in the food section of the San Antonio Express-News on March 2. Photographer Edward A. Ornelas stopped by and snapped photos of our 80th birthday celebration, and a short write-up about our history in the city was also included.

Going Forward

We at The Esquire Tavern are so thankful to have served the San Antonio community for the last 80 years, and we can only hope we’ll continue as one of the top bars on the Riverwalk for the next eight decades as well. If you haven’t been in recently, be sure to stop by this week for our happy hour specials. We look forward to serving you.

You know what makes us one of the best San Antonio Riverwalk restaurants around? We never stop changing. Sure, we’ve been around for decades, but that doesn’t mean we’re stuck at a standstill. At The Esquire Tavern, we always keep things fresh and interesting—especially when it comes to what we serve.

While we still offer some of the classics we served 80 years ago, now we offer that AND a whole lot more. We have drinks from virtually every decade we’ve been open, plus we offer a varied menu of pub fare, sandwiches, snacks and full-on entrees that even the most discerning of diners can enjoy.

Here are just a few highlights from our latest menu update, which launched this spring:

  • Appetizers—We’ve added quite a few apps to our menu, including a delicious citrus trio ceviche, boiled peanuts and a drool-worthy fried corn on the cob. Perfect for sharing or snacking on by yourself!
  • Soups and salads—Looking for something light? How about our chicken tortilla soup, our heirloom tomato salad (complete with pickled shallots and feta) or our chicken mole salad, which comes with candied almonds, oranges and chimichurri sauce?
  • Sandwiches and burgers—There are plenty of hearty burgers and sandwiches if you’re feeling hungry, too. Try our wildcat burger, which boasts grilled pineapple and red pepper jelly, or opt for our Cubano or shrimp sandwich, which is back by popular demand.
  • Plates—Try a spin on an old classic, like our Hudspeth River Ranch lamb lettuce wraps, or go for something tried and true like our fish and chips. We also have a killer grilled pork loin or the ever-popular tavern chicken breast.

We’ve added a lot to our drink menu, too. There are new house cocktails, including the Little River, Pulso del Borracho, Wonderlust King, Padded Cell and Fala Sério, as well as some old classics like the Gin Rickey, the Doctor Cocktail and the Artists’ Special.

Want to give any of these new drink or food items a whirl? Then stop by one of the oldest and best San Antonio Riverwalk restaurants around, The Esquire Tavern, today.
